Derrimut Primary School and Community Centre
The Derrimut Primary School was constructed in 2010 under a Public Private Partnership agreement between the Victorian State Government and Axiom Education Victoria Pty Ltd (Axiom). The facility was on of 11 new government schools that Axiom were contracted to finance, design, construct and maintain on behalf of the State Government in key growth areas of Melbourne. An innovative aspect of the project was the instigation of an additional partnership with the YMCA to provide a range of community, early childhood and aquatic facilities on six of the school sites including Derrimut (see Table 1). At other sites Axiom established partnerships with Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardens Foundation to deliver a kitchen garden and Metro Canteens to deliver enlarged canteen facilities.
Derrimut Primary School opened in 2010 with 250 students and has a current enrolment of 546 (2013). It is expected that enrolment will rise to over 700 in 2014, with longer term estimates of student numbers settling at approximately 470.
The Derrimut Community Centre which adjoins the primary school opened in April 2011. The YMCA provide a range of children’s services on the site, including long-day care, before and after school care, and kindergarten programs. The Centre’s multipurpose room is utilised for play groups, mothers groups, and maternal and child health service provision.
